Architecture, Design and Decorative Arts

Map of thematic routes

Urban or rural, bourgeois or avant-garde

Architecture, design and decorative arts are all the work of creators who have made their marks throughout Quebec.

The only museum devoted to architecture, the Canadian Centre for Architecture offers programming of international calibre and has earned a reputation as a centre for research and education. Its exhibitions and activities explain the different facets of this art and give visitors new perspectives on the city.

"Here at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, we respected the surrounding greystone buildings. Our approach has an educational dimension. I wanted people to understand that greystone was an important architectural element in Montreal."
Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, in Montreal.

Architects, designers and creators have crafted their own works and imposed their own styles.

Just look around as you roam through Quebec, and you'll see the Quebec spirit, with its French, English and other roots, in design, architecture and urban planning everywhere. It is in the groups of buildings in lower and upper towns, in the many details and decorative elements. The museums themselves are part of it; their architecture speaks of history, past and present.
