Religious Heritage

Map of thematic routes

Founded "for Christ and King," New France left many traces of the evangelical mission of the first arrivals and their descendants.

A number of museums are eloquent witnesses of the importance of religious communities in Quebec. Their collections, presented in their original settings, are clear evidence of the active role of priests and nuns in the areas of education, health care and social welfare up until these responsibilities were assumed by the State during the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s.

These communities have conserved unique liturgical items and garments, stitched and embroidered with skill and patience, decorated with gold and silver thread.

Over time, Catholic and Protestant roots intertwined. Their living traces can still be seen throughout the province: churches and cathedrals, convents and chapels, residential schools and hospitals.
